The Light Shines in the Darkness

The darkness this time of the year can be really tough on me. I'm always counting the days until the winter solstice when the days start lengthening again.

Painting snowy winter scenes makes me feel cold. Focusing on the light and warmth of this candle flame was so much better! The surprising dramatic darks and warm glow I was able to re-create with watercolor was great fun!

The title of this painting is taken from the Bible verse John 1:5:

"The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it"

During the darkest days of the year, there is no better hope than light. At Christmas we celebrate how Christ, the Light of the World, came and darkness fled!
