Pink Shadows

Pink Shadows

Sunshine through cherry blossoms is otherworldly, casting everything in a delicate pink light. There is a wonderful contrast between the solid, twisting branches and the floating fragile blossoms. The young girl at the foot of the tree is like the spirit of the cherry blossoms.

Hanami, Seattle

Hanami, Seattle

In Japan, there is a tradition of "flower viewing", or hanami, to welcome spring and enjoy the cherry blossoms. This tradition happens spontaneously in Seattle at the University of Washington where 30 ancient Yoshino cherry trees bloom.

Crowds of people come to enjoy the blossoms and are enchanted by them. People take pictures of their precious children. Couples take selfies. Older folks recount memories of cherry blossoms in years past. For a moment, the whole world is in love with spring and life.

The Spring Rain Wakes the Plum Blossoms

The Spring Rain Wakes the Plum Blossoms

Growing up in Wisconsin, I remember the months of waiting for the snow and ice to melt and the liquid water to return. This watercolor captures those hopeful days when the warm rains wake the plum blossoms and the miracle of spring begins again. Each little raindrop is like a whole little world of reflections.

Neverending Tulips

Neverending Tulips

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, just north of Seattle, is really something wonderful! During the month of April, the tulip farms are just breathtaking!

Some people enjoy the open tulip fields and the long beautiful rows of solid colors. My favorite place is the display gardens at Roozengaarde. There are three and a half acres of never-ending tulips in those gardens and supposedly 250,000 bulbs! The tulips drift in and out of the trees and are planted in color combinations that mix and mingle like brush strokes in a painting.

I just had to paint this scene from Roozengaarde. I love the tulips weaving in and out of the light and flowing through the landscape like an endless river. The combination of festive colors reminds me of confetti - like spring throwing its own party to celebrate life renewed!

Tulip Tapestry

Tulip Tapestry

The interwoven layers of color in this field of tulips reminded me of a tapestry. All those vertical stems are like the warp threads in a garden of woven fabric. I tried to capture how the spring light was filtering through the flowers. The dark bushes in the background set off the colors so beautifully. Can you see the happy little hidden frog, too?

Wisteria Veil

Wisteria Veil

When the wisteria in my garden is in bloom, it is just breathtaking. There's nothing like walking under a veil of the long, lightly-scented blossoms. Before we had our house, it was always a dream of mine to have a wisteria one day. My husband's parents purchased the plant for me 15 years ago when we first bought our house. My husband and father-in-law built the arbor for me. I love how with age, the plant just gets more and more beautiful.

In the painting, I tried to capture how the light filters down through the leaves and flowers and creates a sort of curtain or veil. The softness of the flowers is such a contrast to the geometric hardness of the arbor. The long rectangular design emphasizes the beautiful long blossoms of the wisteria.

Moss Garden Pond

Moss Garden Pond

I was lucky enough to visit the Portland Japanese Garden in February. I've been there several times before, but always in spring and summer.

In winter, the garden has a beauty of another kind. The elegant branches of the Japanese maples were fully exposed. And the moss! The moss was very happy when we visited in February! It was misting (of course) and there was such a peaceful stillness with the soft green moss. The Northwest winter at it's best!

In addition to the beautiful moss, this scene fascinated me because of the different levels in the pond. There is the bottom of the pool with it's rounded gravel, then the fish in the water, and the various reflections at the surface.

Midsummer Sunset, Turtle

Midsummer Sunset, Turtle

I like to go out in the canoe at my parents' cabin on the lake. It's great fun to try to quietly sneak up on the turtles sunning themselves on the rocks. This guy is catching the last rays of the sun on a hot summer evening. The golden light and buzzing dragonflies make it seem like a magical midsummer evening. You know the fairies can't be far away.

King of the Forest

King of the Forest

This summer, my 12 year old son grew taller than me and his voice changed. As a mother, it is really something to watch a little boy change into a man right before your eyes.

This painting was done from a family photo that was taken a few years ago on a hike. My son was so proud of himself for scaling that big rock! He was larger than life and king of the forest!

I imagine he must feel much the same way now, as he grows into his towering body with the confidence to take on the whole world.

Under the Japanese Maple

Under the Japanese Maple

To the embarrassment of many of my friends and neighbors, I have this strange habit of peering under Japanese maples. In public places, in parks, even in people's yards, I know no shame.

Lace-leaf Japanese maples are everywhere in the Northwest. The huge majority of my neighbors have them. They take decades to grow, but the old ones are absolutely incredible. Under each tree's umbrella of dappled light is a hidden world. When I look under a Japanese lace-leaf maple, it makes feel very small, like a fairy living inside the moss and twisty branches.

I did this painting after a recent trip to the Portland Japanese Garden - absolute heaven for a Japanese maple peering person! Underneath, the moss just vibrates with life. The frog hides nearby, giving his approval of the health and vitality of the place.

Snowfall, Sammamish River

Snowfall, Sammamish River

This is the Sammamish River, just down the hill from where I live. I wanted to show the quiet stillness that happens when it snows. Snow is not common where I live, and everyone stays home when it snows. I love the silent hush that covers the busy city whenever the snow falls.

It is quite a challenge for me to paint softly and without many edges, but wonderful to have the chance to paint with so many beautiful grays!

The Weight of Winter

The Weight of Winter

It is always difficult for me to see the garden fade with the coming of winter. It seems such a pity to see the flowers fade.

The roses don't give up easily. There always seems to be a bud or two hanging on until Christmas, blooming against all the odds.

For me, winter has a weight to it; a burden to bear. It comes a such a cost to the delicate things. In my painting, this fragile rose struggles on and shows its beauty in spite of the cold and the snowy burden it bears.

Snowmelt

Snowmelt

This is in Mazama, Washington in the meadows where we cross-country ski. That's Goat Peak in the distance. (If you look carefully, you can just see the lookout at the top.)

I've always had a fondness for skiing through this little stand of birch trees. The vertical white lines they make are just such fun!

In this painting, I played around with changing the color of the trees from yellow-green to blue as they recede. I also reduced the contrast in the far-away hills to emphasize the distance. The golden touches on the snow and on the hillside let you know that the sun feels warm and spring is on its way.
