Cherry Blossom Shadows

Cherry Blossom Shadows

The soft light that filters through the delicate petals of the cherry blossoms contrasts with the gnarled wood of the old cherry tree. Age and youth. Wisdom and naivete. Ying and yang. A new painting from the coronavirus quarantine when the beauty of spring is bittersweet.

Pink Shadows

Pink Shadows

Sunshine through cherry blossoms is otherworldly, casting everything in a delicate pink light. There is a wonderful contrast between the solid, twisting branches and the floating fragile blossoms. The young girl at the foot of the tree is like the spirit of the cherry blossoms.

This painting is part of a series of watercolors depicting the breathtaking cherry trees at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Hanami, Seattle

Hanami, Seattle

In Japan, there is a tradition of "flower viewing", or hanami, to welcome spring and enjoy the cherry blossoms. This tradition happens spontaneously in Seattle at the University of Washington where 30 ancient Yoshino cherry trees bloom.

Crowds of people come to enjoy the blossoms and are enchanted by them. People take pictures of their precious children. Couples take selfies. Older folks recount memories of cherry blossoms in years past. For a moment, the whole world is in love with spring and life.

Under the Arms of Cherry Trees

Under the Arms of Cherry Trees

The 80 year old cherry trees at the University of Washington in Seattle are a remarkable sight. The long branches seem like protective arms reaching out over the visitors who come to admire the trees in bloom. The twisting ancient branches contrast wonderfully with the ethereal blossoms, age and youth intermingling. On this overcast day, the blossoms seemed to create their own glow.

"Under the Arms of Cherry Trees" is part of a series of watercolors featuring the UW cherry blossoms.

This painting is one of 14 of my original watercolors currently on display at Matthew Robert Salon in Edmonds, WA through June 8, 2020. The exhibit is open to the public during business hours and all paintings are available for purchase.

Cherry Blossom Impressionism

Cherry Blossom Impressionism

In spring, the rows and rows of of cherry trees at the University of Washington in Seattle create a sort of cathedral of cherry blossoms. I'm fascinated with the challenge of trying to capture the light that filters through the blossoms.

In this painting, I've borrowed some ideas from the impressionists, using small daubs of paint to create the sense of light.

"Cherry Blossom Impressionism" is part of my 2019 series of watercolors of the University of Washington cherry trees.

This painting is one of 14 of my original watercolors currently on display at Matthew Robert Salon in Edmonds, WA through June 8, 2020. The exhibit is open to the public during business hours and all paintings are available for purchase.

Bright Blossoms

Bright Blossoms

I love it when the cherry trees are in bloom. When the blossoms are set against the dark Northwest evergreens, the flowers just light up! This little scene is just around the corner from where I live in Redmond, Washington. Usually, it's a pretty average church parking lot, but while the cherry trees are in bloom, the view takes your breath away!

Cherry Blossom, Rosy Days

Cherry Blossom, Rosy Days

The cherry blossom is a symbol of Spring that represents renewal and optimism. The joyful blossoms tell us that life is good and anything is possible.

This was painted for my dear friend Bryn as she graduates from high school in 2020 during one of the most challenging times in history. I wish her joy and hope and many rosy days ahead.

My Cherry Tree

My Cherry Tree

Last spring, I cut down my cherry tree. For years, it was a thing of incredible beauty in my garden. My children played in the falling petals when they were babies. I would look out my window and see its pink blossoms glow in the moonlight. It was pure poetry in bloom.

As the garden aged, the cherry tree struggled as it competed with larger and larger trees for water and light. Over the years, it faded and most of it died. Early last spring, we replaced our deck and decided the mostly dead cherry tree would need to go, along with the old rotten deck.

Before they cut it down, I trimmed branches from the part of the tree that was still alive and forced them into bloom in a vase in my living room. This is the last of my cherry tree and my tribute to the beauty it gave us for so many years.

First Breath of Spring

First Breath of Spring

I've been painting cherry blossoms and trying to capture the delicateness of the petals while using less and less color.

The cool spring sunlight is shown through the blossoms with only a hint of warmth. Rather than communicating colorful exuberance, these blossoms are like the first delicate, fragile hope and promise of spring!

I love to try to translate the delicateness of cherry blossoms into watercolor. In this painting, I used soft neutrals to communicate the translucency of the petals in more muted light.

The Spring Rain Wakes the Plum Blossoms

The Spring Rain Wakes the Plum Blossoms

Growing up in Wisconsin, I remember the months of waiting for the snow and ice to melt and the liquid water to return. This watercolor captures those hopeful days when the warm rains wake the plum blossoms and the miracle of spring begins again. Each little raindrop is like a whole little world of reflections.
