Goldfish in Space

Goldfish in Space

Now for something completely different!

During the coronavirus lockdown, I needed to paint something fun and lighthearted. Goldfish fascinate me. They are solid and reflective with fins that are so ethereal they almost disappear at the edges. I have one large goldfish in a 35 gallon tank and I am absolutely mesmerized watching his fins flow as he swims. This is sort of a view of the aquarium of my dreams.

The painting is a triptych - 3 panels forming one image. The center is 18" x 24" with two side panels of 12" x 18" each. The paintings are mounted on cradle board and varnished with cold wax medium. No framing or glass required.

I hope you enjoy the sense of movement in this painting as the fish and plants flow from one panel to the next.

Opening day at the Redmond Farmer's Market was such a beautiful spring day! The vendors were all happy to be there, the Redmond High School Band played, and the atmosphere was so festive!

The flower sellers had buckets and buckets of such beautiful tulips! The spring morning light raking across the tulips was lovely, and it was so charming how these handsome guys were hard at work arranging bunches of flowers to sell.

The pick up is such a perfectly masculine icon. I think it reinforces the contrast of the manly men and the delicate flowers. Plus the dark blue with the glowing yellow light is just delicious!

Under the Arms of Cherry Trees

Under the Arms of Cherry Trees

The 80 year old cherry trees at the University of Washington in Seattle are a remarkable sight. The long branches seem like protective arms reaching out over the visitors who come to admire the trees in bloom. In spring, the rows and rows of of cherry trees at the University of Washington in Seattle create a sort of cathedral of cherry blossoms. I'm fascinated with the challenge of trying to capture the light that filters through the blossoms.

There is nothing like spring in the Northwest. Anticipation, Agapanthus

Anticipation, Agapanthus

I grow agapanthus in my garden in pots. They are about my most favorite flowers EVER. The super big ones aren't hardy here, so my pots have to go in the garage every winter. (Much to my husband's delight.) At the end of the summer, they send up these 4 foot high blossom stalks that explode into huge blue fireworks! The hummingbirds can't get enough of them!

There is something about this agapanthus bud that I just couldn't resist painting. Tulip buds are pretty, crocus buds are nice, but this is a whole company of buds all emerging at once, getting ready for an impressive show! I just love the anticipation!

I love to visit the Farmer's Market when it first opens; especially on those summer mornings when the sun is still low, but you can feel the warmth of the day coming on quickly. Everything the summer sun touches warms up instantly.

This painting was such an interesting challenge! I loved deliberately choosing the warm and cool areas of the painting. It was also such an interesting puzzle to simplify this complicated scene into tonal areas of similar values.

My favorite part of this composition is the triangles. It's so fun how the triangles of the paper around the flowers are similar to the tops of the canopies.

String of Hearts

These vines are planted everywhere in the Seattle area to cover and soften concrete walls. Intertwining vines make such beautiful pictures. I've probably taken hundreds of photos of the ones near Marymoor Park in Redmond, not far from where I live.

One of the reasons I enjoy painting with watercolor is because I am so fond of lines. Watercolor makes it so easy to paint such clean, lovely lines! And of course vine-covered walls are just filled with elegant lines.

I love how these vines change so unevenly in the fall, showing a whole spectrum of color at once. I especially love how the younger leaves in these vines look like necklaces of colorful hearts.

The Elder

The Elder

It's November again. Watching the leaves fall, my heart always breaks a little. What a long time it will be until spring and leaves return. Now, the skeletons of the trees are visible again and their bony arms reach for the weak, cold sunshine.

This ancient tree really engages the imagination. It lives in Fall City, Washington just a few blocks from Quirkz of Art where I used to show my paintings. It's almost as if you can see its bones. Is it two figures trapped together in time? Is it a great and wise spirit that carries the scars of the years but knows more than all of us? If you were a rabbit and you stepped through that hole, where would it take you?

Long Winter Shadows

Long Winter Shadows

This is a scene of the Methow Valley. So often, artists paint mountains as pretty pictures seen from a safe distance. The impressive thing about mountains is how very BIG they are and how small we become when we are near them. When I paint mountains, I want, more than anything, to show how grand they really are! This is a relatively small foothill in the Cascades, but the nearby houses are dwarfed by the scale of this great hill.

The thing that impressed me most about this scene was the incredibly long shadows. They rake across the entire hillside. Even the rocks are casting long shadows. The foreground is already in complete shade and we know the precious winter light won't last long.

Snowmelt

Snowmelt

This is in Mazama, Washington in the meadows where we cross-country ski. That's Goat Peak in the distance. (If you look carefully, you can just see the lookout at the top.)

I've always had a fondness for skiing through this little stand of birch trees. The vertical white lines they make are just such fun!

In this painting, I played around with changing the color of the trees from yellow-green to blue as they recede. I also reduced the contrast in the far-away hills to emphasize the distance. The golden touches on the snow and on the hillside let you know that the sun feels warm and spring is on its way.
