This is part of a small series of spring flower paintings. This series was the first time I have ever worked in a square format. It really is the opposite of the elongated Japanese-style rectangles that I prefer. In a square format, you have to work a whole lot harder to create a sense of energy and motion. In this painting of apple blossoms from my garden, the motion comes from the strong diagonal reaching toward the sunshine. The shadows inside these back-lit blossoms were so fun to paint!
